“Disconnected” is a documentary that, I believe,
was created to spread a bold message, that young adults of today's generation
can survive without technology for an extended period of time. While it was portrayed as a daunting task for
these three college students, they all seemed semi-confident that they would
successfully cut computers from their life for their set period of time.
One of the first thoughts that came
to my mind after hearing what they planned to do was, “How in the world could
young adults of our generation consider cutting computers out of their daily
lives?!” As a college freshman, I have
come to realize how crucial it is to be in contact with professors and
classmates. The most convenient way to
achieve that contact is in fact through emails; a.k.a computers. I imagined how I would react if put in a
similar situation, and came to the conclusion that I probably would have failed
very early on in the experiment, that is if I had even chosen to enter the
experiment in the first place.
Further
on in the documentary, it becomes clear that the students may have
overestimated their ability to abstain from computer use. While one student remains dedicated to
avoiding her computer, the others look for loopholes in the rules of the
experiment, by using a proxy, or consider giving up completely in order to
access their email, Facebook, and blogs.
“Disconnected”
very much confirmed my initial thought, that this task would be quite
challenging and maybe even too much to endure for some students. I admire the three students for attempting
this experiment, but I believe I am too absorbed in the technological world
through school to consider cutting my computer out of my life. Of course, this realization is further supported when one recognizes that I
watched said documentary on my laptop, which is also being used to type this
reflection.
